A merchandised future

The organizers spent £ 758 million, drove the whole world mad and finally presented it an over-hyped, notably Disney-polished attraction park. Shall we laugh? Cry? Be entertained? What will last for the next millennium?

The Dome

The Dome building itself will survive and even have a "commercially sustainable future," as the Dome Minister, Lord Falconer of Thoroton, claimed. Major developers and business groups, including the Japanese finance group Nomura, have already bid to take over the site on December 31st. Among the schemes are the technology theme park "City of the future," a leisure, business and retail center "Dome Europe," a "Sports Dome 2001" or an international merchandise and cultural center for tourism promotions.

The exhibition's contents pale in view of this concept of "commercial sustainability." But no matter how much the Millennium Dome is criticised, the bombastic, plastic disposable shell with its McDonaldian heart is a shining example for a new trend: The merchandising of the future.
