Avatars - caught in the net

Soon, avatars will rule the world. They are precise, immortal, smart and omniscient - perfect mutations of the imperfect human being. Want to be an avatar? We took a deep breath and created digital alter egos to explore the hidden secrets and powers of cyberspace.

In the the Millennium Dome's Talk Zone this was quite easy and took only a couple of minutes. First, a team of British Telecom scanned our bodies from four different angles. Then a software operator adjusted our virtual faces and generated the avatars with a mouse click. A few seconds later everybody in the Talk Zone could see us on a screen as we biked with ET through the cyber-sky.

But this was not all. At the same time our avatars were uploaded to British Telecom's Website. Back home provided with a code and password we could download a copy of our avatars. However, the originals are still caught in the net. We still don't know how they feel and what they think. They seem to be extremely impressed by the virtues of cyberspace. But they do also glance like addicts.

We admit: we liked the avatar thing. But take care: it's not appropriate for children and weak personalities - the risk to get trapped and lead a life on the screen is just too big.

Besides, how do you like them? Well .... not everybody can look like Ananova or Lara Croft.
