Boris Y. Nemtsov ![]() Real Audio Presentation (12:45 min) (Installation Guide) Russia at the Turn of the Millennium Mr. Nemtsov, former Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, said Russia was extremely important to the world because it was the only nuclear power to have made the transition from communism to capitalism and because of its wealth of oil and other natural resources. But there are many problems today: a great deal of corruption, massive poverty, low average salaries. Still, he was optimistic about Russia's future due to an ambitious younger generation, freedom of the press in the country, and new impetus from private businesspeople. Finally, he said that international educational exchange programs would do more to benefit Russia than assistance from the World Bank. |
