Dr. Maritta Koch-Weser ![]() Real Audio Presentation (18:00 min) (Installation Guide) The Environment and the Future Maritta Koch-Weser, general director of the World Conservation Union based in Geneva, outlined five environmental issues she thought must be addressed in the future. One was the urgent need for more environmental funding. Governments are strapped for money, she said, so alternative ways of obtaining financing are necessary. One possibility: an environmental "toll" on plane tickets. She also discussed the need for international cooperation on environmental problems going beyond national borders, concerning waterways, for example; and the need to create a legal framework to deal with issues revolving around genetic engineering, trade, and the environment. |
