Dr. Maritta Koch-Weser Dr. Maritta Koch-Weser is Director General of the World Conservation Union (IUCN). The World Conservation Union was founded more than 50 years ago, and is a union of governments, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations working at the field and policy levels, together with scientists and experts, to protect nature. Before taking up her current position in March 1999, she worked at the World Bank, which she had joined in 1980. In her most recent assignment at the World Bank she was Director for Environmentally & Socially Sustainable Development for the Latin America and Caribbean Region. Her previous World Bank assignments included: Chief of the Environment and Natural Resources Management Division for Asia and Chief of the Environmental Assessments and Programs Division of the Environment Department. Her field experience in international development and environment spans the world.
