Pressing Issues in the Information Age

William Drake, senior associate of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, outlined several issues of the information age he thought should be given more attention in the future. Among other things, he discussed the need to establish regulatory practices for telecommunications and Internet usage, to assess the impact of the information revolution on international relations, to help developing countries create an infrastructure of knowledge enabling them to enter the information age, and to deal with weapons proliferation, the causes of extremism, and demographic implosions and explosions. In tackling these matters, Drake said, one must strike a balance between commercial and non-commercial issues, between the private and public sectors. Ultimately, Drake concluded, broader international dialogue and people-to-people links are necessary to solve these problems.
