The Ethical Limits of Genetic Research

Professor Winnacker, president of the German Research Society in Bonn, gave a sound scientific appraisal of what genetic research can achieve in the years to come and where the limits lie. He said that the biotech revolution would have its most immediate impact in medicine and emphasized the benefits. In the future, he argued, major diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases will no longer be treated at the level of their symptoms, but of their origins. However, Winnacker also issued a warning that we should not forget the serious ethical implications of genetic research. As to the question of why humans should be cloned, Winnacker said: "I've never heard an intelligent answer."
