Benjamin Barber ![]() Real Audio Presentatione (22:05 min) (Installation Guide) The McWorld: Consequences of Economic Globalization Professor Barber, director of the Walt Whitman Center at Rutgers University, argued that what is normally called "globalization" is in fact economic globalization, and that it is having a negative impact on the world. Drugs, pornography, and the "war on children" have all been globalized, he said. Furthermore, he discussed the negative repercussions of the shift from an industrial to an information society, of privatization, commercialization, and what he termed the infantilization of consumers. Said Barber: "We are living in a McWorld." He said that we need to globalize democratic institutions in order to keep economic globalization in check. |
